The anniversary will be the first connection on the London Underground network to receive 4G telephone coverage.

An eastern section - Westminster to Canning Town - will be rolled out from March 2020 as the first 4G section.

Unfortunately, the stations Waterloo and London Bridge, along with the rest of the metro network, must wait until the end of 2020 to receive a full 4G reception.

TfL is already offering WiFi to commuters in 260 subway stations, but the network is lagging behind in terms of full mobile coverage for its passengers. Many foreign cities such as Moscow, Berlin, Tokyo, Paris already benefit from the telephone signal of the subway.

The tight tunnels and the cost of the projects made it difficult for TfL to drive 4G underground.

Shashi Verma, Chief Technology Officer at TfL, said

The London Underground Network is an incredibly challenging environment where technological advances are possible. However, we are well on the way to providing mobile connectivity in our stations and tunnels.

This move follows Mayor Sadiq Khan's promise to improve digital connectivity across London.
